Hooten Young American Whiskey – Batch No. 1 – Aged 12 Years – 92 Proof

The whiskey is aged 12 years and made with a mash bill of 99% corn and 1% barley. The spirit was distilled to 189 proof, barreled at 140 proof, and then bottled at 92 proof from second fill barrels.

Nose

The initial sniff is very sweet. Corn forward with caramel following through. There is a smoky note near the end that wraps with a slight touch of ethanol.

Palate

Very light and sweet on the forward palate. There is zero ethanol on the tongue. The mid palate immediately delivers touches of smoky oak. There is a light spice note that wraps up the taste.

Finish

The finish is not very long. It’s light and sweet. There is no warmth, but the spice note reappears at the very end.

Overall

This is a solid pour for an American whiskey. It’s extremely light and easy to drink. This pour is not some high proof slow sipper. This is meant to be enjoyed in any environment. The folks at Hooten Young went for this profile to highlight the incredible cigars they make. If you’re looking for a bottle to enjoy with your favorite cigar, look no further. Cheers!

Added Water: After 5 drops of water, the smoky note fades and it’s predominantly sugary sweet. After 10 drops of water, the profile really starts to break down and it’s challenging to pick out flavors.
*Full disclosure: I warm my palate before tasting any bourbon. Typically with a potato vodka. It’s always treated me better and I feel I get a much better nose and finish by doing this.

    Aging in second use barrels gives it a floral aroma for me. Very smooth and easy drinker. The bottle looks cool and some of the profits goes to a good cause as well.
